'Birthday party' planned for Minnesota property tax refund program, which turns 35

Posted: 13 Apr 2010 08:19 AM PDT

The Minnesota Property Tax Refund Program — which refunds money to homeowners to keep their property taxes lower — is 35-years old, and state officials will hold a birthday celebration Wednesday at the state Capitol complex.

They've invited legislators and state leaders who were involved in the refund's passage into law.

The party is at 10:30 a.m. in Room 10 of the State Office Building. Among those attending: former Gov. Wendell Anderson, who signed the property tax refund into law, former Tax Chair William Kelly, former Senate President Alec Olson and former House Speaker Martin Olav Sabo.

Current state Rep. Paul Marquart, chair of the Property and Local Sales Tax Division will be there, too. They say they've invited Gov. Tim Pawlenty.

Property tax hike set

Calgary City Council Monday voted 14-1 in favour of approving a mill rate, including a 3.9% property tax increase. It will add just over $80 to the average property tax bill in the city.

When council debated the budget back in November, a 4.79% increase was approved, but because of growth and a slightly smaller take from the province, the number was whittled down.

Mayor Dave Bronconnier says he's pleased the motion was almost unanimously approved. The lone dissenter was Alderman Ric McIver who believes the hike could have been reduced even further.
