Fargo property tax board meets Tuesday morning Posted: 12 Apr 2010 11:43 AM PDT FARGO – Fargo residents who want to appeal the latest property tax value of their homes can do so at the city Board of Equalization meeting at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday at City Hall. City Assessor Ben Hushka said the public hearing typically draws anywhere from a few individuals to a dozen or more. All city property owners whose property values have been adjusted more than 10 percent higher for the 2010 tax year should have been mailed notices, city officials said. Hushka said citywide assessments are roughly 97 percent of what comparable homes are selling for in the various subdivisions. Property owners are urged to call the city assessor's office at (701) 241-1340 to have their homes assessed or reassessed if they feel their assessment is inappropriate. Assessments can be looked up online at www.cityoffargo.com and clicking on the "Property information" link on the right-hand side of the page. On the parcel information database page, you can insert a parcel number or address, into one of the boxes and hit submit. The 2009 appraised value and proposed 2010 appraised value, plus other pertinent property information will be available. Another link will take you to the Cass County web site that will show you what property taxes are owned on the home or business. The City Commission sits once a year as the Board of Equalization. Further appeals can be made to the Cass County Board of Equalization in July, or to the state Board of Equalization in August. Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. Property developer jailed for tax evasion Posted: 11 Apr 2010 11:17 PM PDT A Wellington property developer was today jailed for two years for tax evasion involving $356,000. Lance Christopher James was sentenced in Wellington District Court after he was earlier found guilty on eight charges of evading income tax and admitted a further 11 charges of PAYE evasion, the Inland Revenue Department said. "This is a clear case of a businessman who knew exactly what his tax obligations were, but deliberately set out to ignore them," said Patrick Goggin, IRD assurance manager, investigations. "Our tax system relies on the honesty of taxpayers, and when someone isn't paying their share they're taking money from services like schools and hospitals." Mr Goggin said others who were tempted to cheat on their taxes should take note of the sentence "and be left in no doubt of the very serious consequences if they choose that path". IRD said James had been self-employed as a company director for a number of property development companies since 1993, and was the sole shareholder and director of most of those companies. He had repaid some of the money involved in the offending, but $168,000, excluding any penalties or interest, was still outstanding. - NZPA Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry.
