Pro-property tax campaign signs stolen in Litchfield Park

As Litchfield Park residents prepare to vote on a proposed property tax, someone has begun stealing campaign signs.

Litchfield Park has no property tax. If voters approve one, it would raise $1 million the first year.

The May 18 ballot measure has residents split. Emotions are running high.

This week, campaign signs favoring the property tax began disappearing.

City Clerk Mary Rose Evans on Wednesday sent a notice to three political committees notifying them that removing signs or tampering with them is a misdemeanor.

The committees are Citizens for Responsible Government, No on 405 and Citizens for a Better Litchfield Park, the only group that favors the tax.

Evans also notified the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, which patrols Litchfield Park.

City Councilwoman Marcie Ellis, a tax supporter, said seven signs, three large and four smaller ones, have been stolen from the same area over three days.

"This leads me to believe that one particular person has a bee in their bonnet, and we are not pointing any fingers at the other committees," Ellis said. "However, we feel that people may not know that this is punishable, and we do intend to prosecute should we find whoever it is that is taking down the signs."

Mayor Thomas Schoaf, who opposes the tax, has called for calm and respect for opposing views since the council voted 4-3 in January to place the tax on the ballot.

"The signs are very expensive, and people have a right to put them up, and it's disappointing for people to infringe on any member of our community's right to political expression," he said.

He reiterated that stealing campaign signs is against the law.

"It is absolutely illegal, and if they get caught, they will be prosecuted," he said.

Evans asks anyone who knows about the thefts or sees a theft of a sign occurring to call the Sheriff's Office at 602-876-1011.

Broome legislators hold off on property tax relief proposal

Posted: 23 Apr 2010 04:24 AM PDT

A proposal to give property tax breaks to homeowners who renovate or build additions on their houses was held over Thursday until May 18, when the Broome County Legislature meets again.

Legislator Ronald Keibel, a Whitney Point Republican and a code enforcement officer for more than 30 years, held the proposal over. Keibel said afterward he needed to know more about how the measure would affect property taxes and how many people would benefit from the proposed tax break before he voted on it.

The measure was proposed by Jason Garnar, a Binghamton Democrat. Garnar said the proposal would offer a partial county property tax exemption on increased assessments from improvements made to one- and two-family residences.

The measure would apply to improvements costing $3,000 to $80,000, Garnar said. The projects would have to be completed between March 1, 2011 and March 1, 2012. Homeowners would pay for the increase in assessment over eight years, Garnar said.

More information on the proposal can be found at www.gobroomecounty.com.
