Trenton - (WBGO News 3/15/2010)

Legislative leaders briefed on Governor Christie's budget plan say it eliminates all property tax rebates this year.

The Governor is proposing that any rebate checks be deferred until April of next year.

Assembly budget committee Chairman Lou Greenwald says not getting a check this year puts a burden on the most vulnerable residents.

"That will be a dramatic property tax increase for young families, middle class families and seniors."

The ranking Republican on the budget committee, Assemblyman Joe Malone, says he doesn't like skipping the rebates this year, but says it's part of the shared sacrifice to deal with a multi billion dollar state deficit.

"There is no other choice. We are left with a lot of bad options and we'll have to proceed as best we can trying to through this and make the best of it."

Lawmakers say the planned elimination of this year's rebates will be a big focus in the budget debate in the legislature.

Tax Collector’s Office Reminds Property Owners of the Approaching Property Tax Deadline (Washington County News / Holmes County Times-Advertiser)

Posted: 15 Mar 2010 09:34 AM PDT

The Walton County Tax Collector's Office reminds property owners that March 31 is the last day to pay property taxes before incurring a penalty.

"We encourage all Walton County property owners to pay their property taxes by March 31 to avoid paying an additional penalty that will be assessed on April 1," said Walton County Tax Collector Rhonda Skipper. "It is important for tax payers to know if mailing in a payment the item must be postmarked by the 31st to avoid a penalty."

Tax payments can be made online at www.waltontaxcollector.com or at the DeFuniak Springs or Santa Rosa Beach offices of the Walton County Tax Collector. Office hours at both locations are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.

Once taxes are delinquent on April 1, property owners must pay their taxes with certified U.S. funds in the form of a money order, cashier's check or cash. Personal checks cannot be accepted for delinquent accounts.

On April 1, all unpaid real estate accounts are assessed a 3 percent penalty, plus advertising fee, while tangible accounts are assessed a 1.5 percent penalty, plus advertising fee. These properties are then advertised in the paper as required by law and if still unpaid by May 31 are included in an online Tax Certificate Sale on June 1.

During the Tax Certificate Sale, investors bid to purchase the tax certificates issued on certain delinquent properties. The winning bidder on each property immediately pays the owed taxes and gets his or her money back, with interest, once the property owner pays his or her taxes.

For additional information, please contact the Walton County Tax Collector's Office at 850.892.8121.

VA City Calls for Property Tax Hikes Amid Budget Cut Concerns (WHSV Harrisonburg)

Posted: 15 Mar 2010 09:06 AM PDT

The Alexandria City Council has voted to propose a nearly ten-percent increase in the property tax rate to help deal with state budget uncertainties.

The proposed increase would boost the rate to 99.3 cents per $100 of a property's assessed value. The tax bill for an average property would increase by $193.

The council also voted Saturday to increase commercial property taxes by an additional three cents.

The tax increases would help the city meet its contribution for Metro and would provide a two-percent increase in funding for Alexandria public schools. Many other school systems in the region are facing steep cuts.

The council will hold several public hearings before a final vote on the budget in May.
