“Property tax deferment available” plus 1 more |
| Property tax deferment available Posted: 16 Jun 2010 05:02 AM PDT As the property tax payment deadline approaches in B.C. communities, the provincial government is reminding homeowners with children of the option to defer their taxes. The program was included in February's provincial budget. It allows homeowners with dependent children under 18 to defer property taxes on the family's principal residence. A similar deferment program is available for seniors, and a financial hardship deferment program introduced in response to the recession is still available for 2010 property taxes. Tax payments can be deferred as long as you live in the home and continue to qualify, but must be paid along with administration fees before property is sold or transferred. After deducting the homeowner grant, qualifying owners can defer all or part of the unpaid balance of property taxes for the current year. All penalties, interest, previous year's property taxes and utility user fees must be paid and cannot be deferred. Application forms are available at the finance ministry website, Service BC centres and municipal offices. | Property tax appeals show that more than 58 percent of properties had valuation reductions Posted: 16 Jun 2010 03:32 AM PDT 6/16/2010
By DAVID CLOUSTON Salina Journal Final numbers on informal property tax appeals in Saline County showed that the number of appeals increased by slightly more than 26 percent from 2009, Saline County commissioners learned Tuesday. County Appraiser Rod Broberg told commissioners at their weekly meeting that after change-of-value notices were mailed, his office conducted 751 informal appeals. There were 592 appeal hearings last year. Of the property owners who requested an informal appeal, 420 received a change in value on their properties and 295 did not. The rest either didn't show up for their hearings or canceled them. That means that more than 58 percent of properties had reductions in their original valuations, Broberg told the commission. To date, there are 43 parcels of property that have been appealed by their owners to the small-claims level and four that have appealed to the full Court of Tax Appeals, he said. Can file formal appeals Property owners who appealed at the informal level have 30 days to appeal to the state Court of Tax Appeals. The last letters with the results of the informal hearings with the county were mailed June 1, so there are still some parcels that have the possibility of appealing, Broberg said. In response to a question from commissioner John Reynolds, Broberg said about half of the total number of informal appeals were on residential parcels. And about 70 percent of commercial parcels that were appealed had reductions made in their original valuations.
