Property Appraisers Push For Tax Breaks For Coastal N.W. Florida Counties

Property appraisers from three northwest Florida counties and a state representative say the Legislature should allow tax appraisers to lower coastal property values immediately because of the oil spill.

Appraisers from Escambia, Santa Rosa and Okaloosa counties and Rep. Dave Murzin says the state should then push oil giant BP to compensate the northwest Florida counties for their lost revenue. Otherwise, the tax burden would shift to inland property owners.

They say the Legislature should call a special session soon to deal with the oil spill crisis.

The spill began April 20 when a BP drilling rig off Louisiana exploded. Tar balls and other oil products from the spill began washing up on the far western Northwest Florida beaches last weekend.

Expert Says City Property Tax Increase Will Hurt Economy, Cost Jobs
posted June 10, 2010

During these tough economic times, the last thing Chattanoogans should have to face is a property tax increase, said Justin Owen, director of policy & general counsel of the Tennessee Center for Policy Research.

He said, A property tax hike will result in taking much-needed resources away from businesses, inevitably causing them to reduce wages, lay off workers, or even worse, close their doors entirely.

The Tennessee Center for Policy Research is an independent, non-profit and non-partisan research organization that studies the impact of taxes on Tennessee citizens and business across the state of Tennessee.

Mr. Owen said studies conducted in other states "have also concluded that increased taxes on business property result in fewer businesses and fewer jobs."

Brandon Lewis of www.StopTheTaxIncrease.com said,
The City Council has a pretty easy choice when it comes to closing the budgetary gap. Council members can either decide to continue to insulate the city government and workers from the effects of the recession, ignoring the inefficiencies and waste in many departments, or they can raise taxes. Raising taxes will cost many private sector jobs and perhaps place some residents out on the streets.

He said, "I want to encourage residents and business owners to contact their local council representatives to arrange visits, attend the budgetary council meetings, and visit www.StopTheTaxIncrease.com .

We have been bearing the burden of increased city fees, increased valuations, increased stormwater fees, and some have even experienced double jeopardy in recent annexation efforts by the council. If we dont speak up now, we will not have anyone to blame but ourselves.
