Needham Board of Selectmen backs small-scale personal property tax exemption (Needham Times)

The Board of Selectmen supported, and then forwarded to Town Meeting for approval, a local option allowing a personal property tax exemption for accounts less than $5,000 at its March 23 meeting.

Personal property is considered tangible items not firmly attached to land or buildings and are not part of real estate. This includes merchandise, furnishings, machinery, tools, animals and equipment. A personal property tax mainly affects businesses.

The proposed exemption would exempt 429 Needham businesses from the tax.

"It's a step for local government to provide some sort of relief," said Finance Director Dave Davison. "It also reduces administration costs."

The town would lose approximately $19,000 in revenue from the exemption. But the town is also saving about $17,000 in administration costs. As a result, the town would see a comparatively low net loss of $2,000 once the savings are factored in.

"This saves time and produces good will," Selectman John Bulian said.

The tax exemption will be a part of the Special Town Meeting warrant at the Town Meeting in May.

Yavapai County considering property tax hike (FOX 11 Tucson)

PRESCOTT, Ariz. (AP) — Budget writers in Yavapai County are laying the groundwork for a possible hike in the county property tax rate if voters fail to approve a penny increase in the state sales tax.

The Board of Supervisors face falling property values, decreasing sales tax revenue and cost shifts that the state Legislature shifted to county government.

Supervisors Chairman Chip Davis said it might be better to increase real estate taxes incrementally to prevent a greater tax increase later.

The county cannot increase real estate tax levies by more than 2 percent a year, plus new construction.

Supervisor Tom Thurman said business owners hanging on during the downturn have complained that a tax increase could cause them to close their doors.

Monterey County property tax payment due (The Salinas Californian)

The deadline for payment of the second installment of 2009-2010 Monterey County Property Tax is on April 12.

The public is reminded to mail their tax payments postmarked on or before the due date in order to avoid a 10 percent penalty and $20 cost charge.

Payments also may be made by calling 800-491-8003 or online at www.co.monterey.ca.us/taxcollector.
